Abstract

Mathematical modelling is widely regarded as a promising approach in mathematics education for exploring Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, opportunities for mathematics teachers to design and teach modelling tasks are unevenly distributed. Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) offers new possibilities to support such teaching activities. This study is a classroom-based exploratory research project. Starting with the design of mathematical modelling tasks on sustainable development themes, the researchers explored the potential of integrating AI into mathematical modelling instruction and cultivating students' sustainable development thinking by analyzing teacher-AI dialogue transcripts, mathematical modelling lesson plans, and classroom reflections.
