Hence, developing stochastic competencies is a mandatory goal in mathematics education. However, challenges are apparent in the three subdomains of data, combinatorics, and chance. Despite their growing societal importance, the state of research on primary school stochastic competencies and their development remains insufficient. Accordingly, in this study, we conducted a longitudinal analysis of the development of students’ stochastic competencies in Grade 4 by collecting data from 586 students across 42 classes in 18 schools in Germany. The results show developments in all three subdomains as well as significant differences both between schools and classes.
