Semiotic noticing is grounded in Duval’s semio-cognitive theory and focuses on three analytical functions: the identification of distinctive features, treatments, and conversions. Drawing on Rabardel’s theory of instrumental genesis, these functions are transformed from a theoretical artefact into an analytical tool through the abstraction of a scheme of use that emerges from the detailed analysis of three students’ written solutions.
