Students’ approaches to equivalence are examined in a function-based context, where an equation is represented as a comparison of two functions. Common solutions are visually represented by a shared X value of intersection points, derived by representation of a sequence of solution-preserving transformations. Implemented in the STEP platform, answers to Example Eliciting Tasks (EETs) –including triangulation of choice of examples from lists of equations, learner-generated examples and choice items are automatically analysed.
