⬇ Download PDFArithmetical skills are essential for informed participation in society and are cumulatively developed through mathematics education up to higher education. This study examines the relationship between elementary school teacher students' skills with natural numbers, integers and rational numbers. Data from 1,711 elementary school teacher students were analyzed using item response theory and structural equation modelling. Results revealed high skills with natural numbers and rational numbers, but notably lower performance with integers. Structural equation modelling showed exceptionally strong relationships between natural number and integer skills, with both direct and indirect pathways from natural numbers to rational numbers, indicating partial mediation.
