Abstract

Mathematical modelling comprises various activities and focuses on diverse research foci. However, overviews of these aspects are largely missing. In a systematic literature review of 105 papers published between 2020 and 2024, we asked: (1) What modelling activities were addressed in research? (2) What research foci were explored, and what activities were analyzed within these foci? Analysis revealed that most studies examined the modelling process holistically. Among specific activities, research studies most frequently analyzed mathematizing, working mathematically, and validating. Modelling performance was the most frequently examined research focus, alongside affect, technology, and STEM. Creativity was analyzed holistically, whereas other foci (e.g., problem posing) were assessed through activities such as simplifying.
